The IT Business Case for the NCH is currently with the Department of Health, while the National EHR Business Case was recently signed off by the HSE Board and is being sent to the Department for approval.
The approval of the National EHR Business Case is important for the future IT plans at the NCH, Mr Richard Corbridge, HSE Chief Information Officer, told MI. “The IT Business Case for the NCH is with the Department of Health at this stage. One of the areas it points to is the approval of the national EHR Business Case; this ensures that there is no double-counting of spend or benefits released,” said Mr Corbridge.
“If the national EHR Business Case is not approved, then the NCH will need to procure a separate and single EHR system; this will not be integrated to national systems and will set it apart from the wider healthcare system, which would make the launch of a digital hospital quite difficult.”
As originally revealed by www.medicalindependent.ie, the total cost of rolling out the National EHR is an estimated €875 million over 10 years.
