Fine Gael Senator Colm Burke said he welcomed the passing of the Bill “as it serves a very important purpose and introduces a legal obligation on medical professionals to obtain indemnity insurance.”
“The level of trust that we place in doctors and those charged with our healthcare is immense,” said the Party’s Seanad spokesperson on Health.
“Allowing a situation to persist whereby medics are operating without adequate, or any, insurance cover is simply unacceptable.”
He added there was a need to have legislation in place “dealing with this requirement for all medical practitioners to have medical indemnity insurance.”
“If the Medical Council, the State Claims Agency and the Department of Health work together to determine the appropriate level of Insurance to be held by practitioners we can be confident that, in all eventualities, the doctor is adequately covered and the patient is being treated with absolute peace of mind.”
