Short film depicts ‘the last GP’

<em>The Last GP</em>, a short film commissioned by NAGP Chairperson Dr Andy Jordan, gives an account of Ireland in 2035. The scene is set outdoors around an open fire 14km from the “Dublin quarantine zone”.

The film shows a sick man being tended to, while another man (accomplished actor Mark Huberman) gives an account of life in Ireland before the end of general practice.

The story outlines how funding cuts to general practice meant many practices went out of business and young GPs “sought work on distant shores”.

“When the big flu of ’22 hit…well, we didn’t stand a chance,” an actor notes.

The video was shown at the NAGP AGM 2018, with CEO Mr Chris Goodey commenting that it would be shared all over the country and around the world.

Meanwhile, Dr Jordan urged members to use social media to highlight the plight of GPs.

In the <em>NAGP Annual Report 2017</em>, Dr Jordan described 2017 as a “depressing year” but said members needed to “battle on”.

“This coming year is critical for the future of general practice. This is our year. If we cannot save general practice in the next 12 months, then I think we must face the reality that it will only be possible if more GPs get involved in the political process.”
