Prof Veale to take on Ironman for Arthritis Ireland research

By Dermot - 30th Jul 2015 | 4 views

Prof Doug Veale, Consultant Rheumatologist in St Vincent’s University Hospital, is one of the athletes taking on the Ironman 70.3 triathlon, to help raise funds for Arthritis Ireland. He will swim 1.2 miles, cycle 56 miles and run 13.1 miles, all within an 8.5 hour cut-off, to raise funds for the Arthritis Ireland Research Nurse Network.

Prof Veale has established an international reputation in translational research in the areas of angiogenesis, early arthritis, biopharmaceutical therapy, biomarkers and scleroderma.

A spokesperson for Arthritis Ireland said that, with the right investment, better treatments can be found for arthritis, which affects nearly 1 million adults and over 1,000 children in communities in Ireland.

“Ultimately, our goal is to find a cure,” said the spokesperson. “To this end, Arthritis Ireland is funding research Chairs in UCD and Trinity College, Dublin. A key part of this work is a team of specially-trained nurses that will work in conjunction with the Chairs. They will collect blood and tissue samples from arthritis patients all over Ireland to speed-up research.”

Public support is needed to ensure it can continue to fund this project, said the organisation.

“By supporting Prof Veale on this sporting challenge, you will be ensuring that Arthritis Ireland can continue to invest in ground-breaking research. This research will lead to a better understanding of arthritis, and the development of new treatments and drugs that will ensure that more people can reclaim their lives from this devastating disease. One hundred per cent of your donation will go towards funding this critical part of our research.”
