New Vice-President elected to Medical Council

By Dermot - 03rd Jul 2020

Dr Tom Crotty, a Consultant Histopathologist at St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, has been elected by the Medical Council to the vacancy of Vice-President brought about by the resignation of outgoing Vice-President, Dr Anthony Breslin.

Dr Breslin, a Specialist in Public Health Medicine in the North Western Area of the HSE, has been heavily involved in dealing with the challenges the health service has faced arising from Covid-19. Due to this, and the likely future demands, he has not been able to dedicate the time he wishes to his role as Vice-President but will remain as a member of the Council and as Chairperson of one of its committees.

President of the Medical Council, Dr Rita Doyle, commented: “I congratulate Dr Crotty on his election as Vice-President. Tom brings broad experience to the role and has been a valuable member of the Council since his appointment in 2018.

“I also want to thank Dr Anthony Breslin for his contribution as Vice-President and his continuing work as a member of the Medical Council.”

Newly elected Vice-President Dr Crotty said: “As a country and as a health service we currently face many continuing challenges due to Covid-19. I am looking forward to utilising my experience in this role to fulfil the aims of the Council of protecting patients and supporting doctors.

“I look forward to working with the President, other Council members, the CEO and staff in fulfilling the vision, mission and objectives of the Medical Council.”

Medical Council CEO Mr Philip Brady welcomed the election of Dr Crotty, stating: “Dr Crotty brings great experience to the role and will continue to assist the Council in fulfilling our role in protecting patients and supporting doctors.

“I would also like to acknowledge Dr Breslin’s contribution to the Council and thank him for his continuing work as a member of the Council.”

The Vice-President is elected by the 25 members of the Council and only a registered medical practitioner can hold the position in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Act 2007.
