Loss of skilled clinicians compounds crisis in HSE psychiatric services, says mental health group

By Dermot - 19th Jun 2018

The former is the national coalition promoting improved mental health services and the social inclusion of people with mental health difficulties

Director of Mental Health Reform, Shari McDaid said: “Mental Health Reform is very concerned about the loss of skills and experience to essential services for people experiencing severe mental or emotional distress within a context of already stretched services.”

“Waiting lists are already unacceptably high for child and adolescent mental health services, while adults with severe mental/emotional distress continue to suffer gaps in the multidisciplinary care that they should receive. The news of these resignations is bound to raise concern among families affected by mental health across the country. The Government and the HSE urgently need to ramp up investment and find ways of providing therapeutic support for all children and adults with severe mental health difficulties in need. The failure to provide these services is costing Ireland billions of euro in lost productivity, not to mention the cost to people’s quality of life.”
