HSE extends historic rest day requirement in light of Covid-19 crisis

By Dermot - 26th Mar 2020

The HSE has agreed to extend the date by which accumulated historic ‘rest days’ must be taken until 31 December 2021.

The decision was taken following representation by the IMO on the issue.

“This decision comes in the context of the current COVID-19 crisis, and the previous deadline of 31 December 2020,” a spokesperson for the IMO stated.

“Had that deadline remained in place, eligible consultants would, potentially, have had to depart from the health service at the height of an unprecedented crisis. This was clearly not in the interest of consultants, the service, or most importantly patients.”

The HSE informed the IMO of its decision on Wednesday 25 March.

“This request stems from the difficulties arising in the context of the current Covid-19 crisis,” according to the HSE.

“I wish to advise that the HSE have given consideration to this request and are agreeable to the extension of the deadline for the taking of historic rest days to end December 2021.”
