Senator Burke said he has concerns about the “disproportionate increase” in the number of managerial and administrative staff at the Executive.
“I believe it is time to carry out a full review of the management structures in the HSE to see if it is cost effective,” said Senator Burke.
“There has been a total increase of 1,789 additional managerial and administrative staff in the HSE in the period December 2014 to January 2017. It has gone from 15,112 to 16,901, a 11.83 per cent increase.
“The number of managers in the HSE increased from 4,721 to 5,112 in the period December 2014 to December 2015.”
Senator Burke said that there is “no evidence to justify this sudden increase” in the number of managerial staff at the HSE.
“We are in urgent need of additional front line staff and in particular nursing staff,” said Senator Burke.
“During the same two year time period the number of Public Health Nurses only increased by 39, from 1460 to 1499.
“The disproportionate increase of managerial and administrative staff needs to be explained. We need to review at the management structures within the HSE to maximise its output.”
