Frustrating stalemate for St Vincent’s

By Dermot - 25th Apr 2018 | 9 views

Vincent’s started brightly and enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges. The game’s best chance fell to Ruairi Irwin, who dribbled through the opposition defence only to see his close range drive denied by a sharp save. Barra Neary had another close-range effort well saved and Fionn Nally threatened with an angled drive from the right. One-way traffic at this point and Vincent’s came agonisingly close when Peter Kelly saw his effort smash off the post from an acute angle. Unfortunately, the game will be remembered most for those forced off. Ruairi went down with a serious-looking knee injury. Barry Power and Eddy Wrynn, both suffering hamstring tears, followed him to the sideline.

Newlands/Castle Park came close when an audacious long-range effort was tipped onto the crossbar by goalkeeper Sean Keane and again when a late header whistled passed the post. Second-half chances were otherwise rare and the game ended in stalemate. St Vincent’s intern Luke Harrington harassed the opposition forwards all throughout the game, while Greystones GP Peter Kelly put on a clinic in how to play the holding midfield role. Vincent’s need to bounce back as games come thick and fast.

<h3 class=”subheadMIstyles”>Vincent’s key performer</h3>

Ruairi Irwin completely dominated the first-half of this game and his absence was sorely felt following his injury. The anaesthetist specialist registrar’s aggression meant every challenge was tilted in his favour. Once the ball was won, he drove on goal with purpose to create chances for himself or others. His development as a centre midfield player has been remarkable over the course of the season and he is one of the first names on the teamsheet. We wish Ruairi the best of luck with his recovery, and hope he can recover to contribute before season’s end.

<h3 class=”subheadMIstyles”>Note of thanks</h3>

St Vincent’s Hospital FC would like to thank all those who attended the recent table quiz at Kiely’s of Donnybrook. The club would like to extend a particular thanks to Colin Underwood and his team at Medserv for sponsoring the event. Medserv provide simple, accurate and reliable billing for medical professionals and we can safely say they were fantastic partners and an absolute pleasure to deal with.
